One movie, two movie . . .

The history of movie-making in Iowa goes back at least to 1935, when Penitentiary was shot at the old Iowa Men’s Reformatory at Anamosa. These are some of the better-known shot-in-Iowa movies that succeeded.

1935: Penitentiary

1938: Union Pacific (Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, directed by Cecil B. deMille) at Council Bluffs

1968: Cold Turkey (Dick Van Dyke) at Winterset and Greenfield

1977: F.I.S.T. (Sylvester Stallone) at Dubuque

1980: Take This Job and Shove It (Art Carney, Barbara Hershey) at Dubuque

1984: Children of the Corn (story by Stephen King) at Whiting and Country (Jessica Lange, Sam Shepard) at Dunkerton and Waterloo

1987: Miles from Home (Richard Gere) at Cedar Rapids

1989: Field of Dreams (Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Burt Lancaster) in Dyersville and Dubuque

1994: The Bridges of Madison County (Clint Eastwood, Meryl Streep) in Winterset

1995: Twister (Helen Hunt) in Ames

1998: The Straight Story (Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek) in Laurens and Clermont
