more than raising money

Dave
Olson, senior vice president with Holmes, Murphy & Associates
in West Des Moines, says that with all the cutbacks, the art
center, science center, and other worthwhile groups are not
getting government money they used to get. "So there's all
this need for people to go out and raise money," says Olson,
which he does.
But one of his most rewarding experiences has been with his
"little brother" through the Big Brothers-Big Sisters organization.
"I love athletics and thought it would be fun if the child
also was inclined to enjoy athletics. So, I requested that
as an interest of the youngster.
"Kyle and I hit it off the first day we met. The next time,
I brought a baseball bat, glove, and ball, and I learned then
it was going to take a lot of work. We signed him up for Little
League baseball. That was a complete disaster-he was the last
kid put in the game and he couldn't hit the ball. We decided
at the end of the season that we'd do other things.
"He loves computers, science fiction, and comics, while I
don't have a great interest in those things. But he got me
involved and I learned a lot. If I had to do it all over again,
I would pick the same guy. We hooked up when Kyle was 7 years
old. He graduated from Lincoln High School last year and joined
the military service. We've been close."
