One of Vicki Brogan's pet projects is Gilda's Club, a support
group for people with cancer and their families. She remembers
one fundraising race last March where they expected 500 people,
ended with 1,100 runners and walkers, and garnered more than
$14,000 for the Quad Cities chapter. But Brogan, business
development coordinator at Russell Construction Co. in Bettendorf,
remembers one particular racer.
"People came to pick up their packets for the race. One
man said his sister had just found out she had cancer and
he needed more information on Gilda's Club. He was choked
up, but after I showed him the meetinghouse and talked about
our philosophy, he went away and was excited about getting
his sister back there . . . It makes you see you can have
a lot of effect on people's lives. It makes you count your
blessings and see how fragile life can be."
-Julia Johnston wrote about family succession
in the June/July issue of the magazine.
